Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla and mashed bananas.
Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the banana mixture until just combined.
Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for 28-32 minutes or until golden brown.
Let cakes cool before frosting with cream cheese frosting made by beating softened cream cheese and butter until fluffy, then adding powdered sugar.
