  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 lb ground turkey or chicken (instead of sausage)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
  • Preparation Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground turkey or chicken and cook until browned. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
  2. In the same skillet, sauté chopped onion for about 5–7 minutes until softened; add minced garlic last minute.
  3. Return the protein to the skillet and stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Stir in heavy cream along with one cup of mozzarella and a quarter cup of Parmesan until melted.
  5. Cook tortellini according to package directions; drain well.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Combine cooked tortellini with sauce in a large bowl until coated.
  7. Pour into a greased baking dish and top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Bake for about 20–25 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  8. Let rest for a few minutes before serving; garnish with fresh basil if desired.
